February 10, 2010... Forbidden Film Forum!
By CptSqweky at 02/08/2010 - 04:42
Photobucket Okay, the film forum isn't actually forbidden. In fact, I encourage you to come. The movie though... the movie is about a planet that is forbidden. Why is it forbidden? Well you'll have to come on down and see, won't you? Muahahahahahahahahahaaaa!!!

Forbidden Planet is, quite simply, one of science fiction's greatest movies. Quite an accomplishment, despite being from 1956, an epoch known mostly for it's MST3K fodder. Forbidden Planet was inspired by Shakespear's The Tempest, being about Dr. Morbius, an incredible genius who lives on a planet long thought unexplored, all alone except for his daughter and Robby, their robot servant. When a human scout ship arrives at the planet, they are amazed at the level of technology Morbius has, but also very confused and concerned that the rest of the colony he arrived with simply disappeared. Dr. Morbius is obviously hiding something, but what? And what of this alien race that inhabited the planet long before humans? How did they die off, and what secrets do the remains of their technology hold?

While many people may be wary of watching such an old movie, I ask you to give it a chance. While some of the special effects may be cheesy by today's standards, they were top of the line for their day (Robby the Robot alone cost $125,000 to build) and the movie does stand up incredibly well as a movie even today, despite it being almost 60 years old.

And if that isn't enough to convince you, I'll me making and bringing fresh, homemade cookies. So come on down and watch this gem of sci-fi cinema.

Same time and place as usual: B094 of the JFSB at 7:00 p.m.
